The hidden impacts of problem gamblers on their families

Abstract

Unlike other addictions, gambling does not have any physical signs, which is why the researcher explores the “hidden impacts”. What is more, the impacts of gambling do not only affect the gambler, but it also has an impact on the gambler’s family. By this, this research will be delving into the hidden impacts that problem gambling has on members of the gambler’s family. In this concept, the researcher will be focusing on the nuclear family such as the partner / spouse of the gambler and children. For the purpose of this study, the qualitative method of data gathering was employed. Eight semi-structure interviews were conducted with professionals working within the local criminal justice system, and others who work within the local contexts of social work, social policy and the psychological field. The interviews were analysed using the thematic analysis with findings revealing various impacts which the family undergoes. Finding further show that children of problem gamblers are at a higher risk of becoming gamblers themselves.
