Abstract: A descriptive non-experimental research design, using semi structured interviews was utilized to explore the experiences of informal caregivers of dementia patients in a home environment. Furthermore, the effects and bearing such experiences had on the decision to hospitalize the patient are also considered. Generally, it is believed a failure when responsibility of a relative suffering from dementia is handed over to the staff at a caring home or hospital. The sample, consisting of eight carers, participated in the research. These carers were specifically selected since they were entrusted with the care of the dementia patients before hospitalization and who continued to pay regular visits in the wards. The study was conducted in two female wards in Mount Carmel Hospital. The interviews were later transcribed and analyzed through a thematic data analysis. Descriptions of findings were examined to help qualify emotional, physical and psychosocial experiences. The study tried to shed light on the impact of lack of support carers' experience. It also investigate the vital role psychiatric nurses play in giving the much needed support to physically and emotionally drained relatives. The study explores the effects professional advice, support and encouragement have on regular visits and prolonged care of patients at home. Health care professionals should acquire more knowledge on this subject to be able to give the support required.
