Abstract: The main objectives of this qualitative study were to examine if patients suffering from depression find physical exercise helpful, how it affects their recovery and to explore if patients are willing to incorporate exercise as part of their treatment plan. Through semi-structured interviews the perspectives of nine individuals who suffer from depression were identified. This was a purposive sample and all respondents agreed to participate. The author herself designed the research tool after an extensive review of the literature. The interviews' transcriptions were scrutinized and the perceptions of the participants in relation to the effect of physical exercise on depression were elicited. Three themes were identified: the patients' perspectives of physical exercise, roadblocks to exercise and the patients' suggestions. The results indicated that physical exercise can be both acceptable and accessible to individuals who suffer from depression, if it is to become a possible treatment option or used as an adjunct treatment. Some important recommendations include that the physical activity chosen should be personally pleasing and satisfying, patients are encouraged to exercise, the possibility of long term goals, and getting the necessary support and encouragement from carers and health professionals. Future recommendations include: addressing ignorance, investing in rehabilitation and promoting a healthy staff where psychiatric nurses can use advocacy skills by working towards the patients' goal towards recovery. Therefore, this dissertation might be a scope for further studies in this field where patients will have a choice for other treatment options.
