Data migration issues in information system cutovers : issues and approaches

Abstract

Technology is continuously changing and with change comes improvements; we all know that businesses nowadays are depending more and more on technology rather than everything being done manually. As we know everyone strive to have the best technology in their grasp in order to gain the competitive edge on each other and so businesses today don’t think twice to move from one system to another in order to do so they must migrate (move) everything they have on the old system to the new one. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to emphasise the importance of data quality in organisations. Issues arise in IT cutovers where you want to migrate data from one system to another and the aim of this study is to reduce these as much as possible. Design: The questions for this research were approached by the qualitative paradigm; the data was gathered from qualitative methods; desk research, ticket system analyses of incidents and also through interviews. Findings: The results of the findings shows what needs to be considered before the actual project kick-off analyse and see what you need as software that is compatible with the new system. Difficulties which some of them were recurring in several areas of data quality and others that don’t happen that often. Conclusion: Data quality issues are usually present; several data quality aspects (qualities) are involved. Recommendations are proposed in order to address all issues. Implications/Value – The study shows that issues can arise in such projects and may result in a struggle to complete the project. With this study company Daleth can perform better in the data migration future cutover projects.
