Mothers' view of epidural analgesia following normal childbirth.

Abstract

Epidural analgesia is a central nerve blockade technique, which involves the injection of a local anaesthetic into the lower region of the spine, close to the nerves that transmit painful stimuli from the contracting uterus and birth canal. The study aims to explore mothers' experiences following epidural analgesia during normal childbirth. Its objectives are to identify mothers' knowledge about epidural analgesia, to examine mothers' feelings of satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction after epidural analgesia, to examine how mothers decided to choose epidural and finally to investigate mothers' experiences of epidural. To fulfil the study's aim, a quantitative approach was adopted and data was collected by means of a questionnaire. Thirty participants were recruited by convenient sampling with the inclusion criteria of having a normal vaginal delivery with epidural analgesia. The data was analyzed by Microsoft Excel in form of figures and/or tables and content analysis. Findings suggested that most mothers were well informed about epidural analgesia during their antenatal period and that this information was mainly gained during their antenatal classes. The majority of mothers decided themselves to opt for epidural, but when it was not the case, the midwife caring for them suggested it. Findings also concluded that almost all mothers were satisfied with epidural and that it helped then significantly during their labour. Recommendations were put forward and these include recommendations for further research, recommendations for education and recommendations for practice.
