Abstract: A study of and proposal for automation within a software services firm. The firm has been recently acquired by three sister business services firms. The merged firm exports services to European countries, one of them a G8 economy. A stated objective is much increased sales, requiring an increase of staff headcount from circa 300 to twice that number over several years, and improved governance. Purpose: This case study aimed to amend the existing automation while satisfying internal and external requirements consequent to the acquisition, and enhance positioning in overseas service and software markets. Design: A qualitative approach was used as a research method to obtain primary data. Qualitative tools such as interviews and interface analysis, as described by the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge, were used. Secondary data was also used, and was obtained from the body of knowledge of two professions, and from journal articles. Findings: A range of business and software requirements are articulated for this exportoriented software provider as it eyes its opportunities and challenges after the Foreign Direct Investment in the local firm. Conclusion: The study sets out a move from a fragmented project systems environment to an integrated system supporting revenue, market and governance objectives. The improved and automated business, financial, and project processes would better align with two reference bodies of knowledge and enable better management agility and control. Implications: The export-oriented company, being both successful and interesting, was the subject of a recent takeover and therefore a need for better governance and automation was desired.
