A lot of water has passed under the bridge since Malta was awarded the George Cross, yet the hardships endured during the siege have stuck like barbed arrows in the memory of many. Grim indeed was Malta's situation during the war. Of blood, toil, sweat and tears, the Maltese had their full measure. Nearly every town and village bore scars from the bombs which fell thick and fast. Not even hospitals and churches escaped the attacks. Many people were buried alive under the debris of falling masonry. The spectre of death forced people from all walks of life to live in tunnels and deep rock shelters. When food became scarce and prices soared, all had to tighten their belts. Ordinary amenities of life vanished. The whole island soon changed into one big fortress. In the face of overwhelming odds, however, Malta carried on her struggle against the enemy, adding lustre to her name.en_GB
