Abstract: The foundation stone of Valletta was laid by Grand Master Fra Jean de la Vallette on March 28, 1566. 400 years have passed since that eventful day in the history of Malta. The building of the city of Valletta spread over many years; it was not until 1578 that St. John's Conventual Church was completed and, although the first houses for the Knights were sufficiently advanced to be occupied when the Order took official residence in the city in 1571, the Aulberges we know today were completed at a later date.
