Abstract: Surely all loves of history who are well acquainted with the French occupation of Malta and the subsequent revolt and capitulation must have come across the name of the Rev. Archpriest Dr. Saverio Cassar, the priest who was elected by a popular vote to lead the Island of Gozo during the revolt against Napoleon's forces. Unluckily Cassar's name is merely hinted at by our historians, and his activities as Chief Commander of the Island's forces are summarily dismissed by a few sentences. No wonder his patriotism in a moment of hard ordeal has sunk into oblivion. Even in Gozo, the land of his birth, there is only one reminder of this dynamic priest, and that is a narrow street in Victoria which bears his name and where stood intact, up to a few years ago, his house of residence.
