In recent years, especially since Malta became independent, there has been remarkable progress in art in these islands. Equally significant has been the reawakening of an added interest in Maltese craftsmanship, which has come about as a result of increased tourism and a desire to tap every aspect of the country's economic resources. A close study of trends in Maltese art indicates that even as far back as the Neolithic times, architecture was highly developed here. The temples at Hal Saflieni with their massive open-air structures of refined workmanship,, intricate chambers, and various pillars and arches are evidence of a foretaste of the styles of architecture in years to come. Pottery remains found in these temples, too, indicate the style of the Maltese artist. Works. like that of the wonderful clay statuette, The Maltese Venus, show a fine taste in. modelling, decoration and finishing. [excerpt]en_GB
