| Abstract: | By Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, bearing date April 27, 1818. His Royal Higness the Prince Regent. acting in the name and on behalf of His Majesty, was "graciously pleased" to institute and create an Order of Knighthood by the name, style and title of The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. By the same Letters Patent the Governor of Malta, Lieut. General Sir Thomas Maitland, was constituted and appointed Grandmaster of the said Order. [excerpt] |
