Abstract: Throughout the years, teenage pregnancy has consistently been viewed negatively, with teenage mothers being regarded as irresponsible and lacking in maternal skills. Furthermore research suggests that these mothers, do not further their education. The aim of this study is to explore the personal experiences of teenage mothers reading for a degree at the University of Malta, and to gain an in-depth perception of their relationship with their children. Five teenage mothers were interviewed and their experience was evaluated through an interpretative phenomenological approach. Results indicate that, with support, they were able to continue with their studies and to attach with their child, however, not without conflict and stress. Four super-ordinate themes are presented in this study; ‘Attachment through the mother’s lens’, ‘Taking care of you’, ‘Thank you for your support?’ and ‘Continuing education’.
