dc.description.abstract | This research study provides a professional perspective on the implications of adoption. Five professionals, specifically psychologists, who work in the sector of adoption, were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Data was then analysed using thematic analysis, which led to the identification of four main themes: Not for the faint-hearted, Leaving everything behind, Siblings, and Being different in an intolerant culture. Each theme was supported by extracts of data from the transcripts, followed by a discussion. Consequently, this process led to key findings, including the fact that Maltese culture is intolerant of diversity, and that there is lack of preparation given to both the adoptive parent and the child during the adoption process. This also led to the understanding that although, most of the time, the child is considered as the identified patient, it is often the system that is causing the child to misbehave. This study was useful in creating professional suggestions targeted at both policy makers and people seeking to adopt. This brings about hope that an adopted child, given the necessary support, can flourish. | en_GB |
