Abstract: The aim of this qualitative study was to gain an in-depth experience of the meaning of patients suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and the participant’s subjective view on the process of rehabilitation. The study focuses on the lived experience of COPD patients including health and illness perceptions, coping and adjustment, self-efficacy and its role in self-management of their condition. The study also explores the role of the pulmonary rehabilitation program and how it influenced the individual’s psychological adjustment and quality of life. It is based on 6 semi-structured interviews. The participant’s experiences were categorized into 4 different super-ordinate themes; ‘Factors affecting adjustment’; ‘Stressors’; ‘Coping’ and ‘The effects of pulmonary rehabilitation’. The results are consistent with the existing literature showing that this condition is very challenging, and associated with a number of key stressors. From the interviews it was evident that COPD participants are accepting their limitations. Moreover, limitations of the study and future recommendations were presented.
