Abstract: | Man has an instinctive repugnance to anonymity to which corresponds an instinctive feeling for identity that makes identification possible. Hence the continual process of name-giving to persons, places and things. Name-giving is, therefore, a process of identification. Man in his continual migration from one place to another gave names to the places he settled in. This is the historical origin of all the villages of Malta and Gozo and, indeed, hills and valleys.
