Abstract: According to a census held in October 1861 there were 324 persons residing at Sliema. Ten years later the population of Sliema had increased to 1,600, but the inhabitants of this new suburb of Valletta still lacked several important amenities including that of a pharmacy. In an article published in a local newspaper in August 1868, the need for a pharmacy at Sliema was pointed out. A similar request was again voiced in another local paper in June 1870, where the correspondent pointed out that Ia necessita di un medico e di una farmacia nella Sliema e in oggi divenuto un fatto stringentissimo. In November of the same year a petition was circulated among the inhabitants of Sliema, addressed to the Government, in which a request was made for two things, one of them being the establishment of a pharmacy at Sliema. According to a local newspaper this was the third petition che si tara sui proposito. [excerpt]
