Abstract: In recent months there has been a re-awakening of interest in Malta's traditional dance among the general public. This article traces the fortunes of il-Matija as they evolved through various performances, mostly at the Governor's Palace in Valletta, between 1844 and 1875. The year 1844 marks the beginning of the first revival of the court version of this dance in the 19th Century. This revival, which only lasted a few years and came to an end after 1850, was due to the patronage of Lady Stuart, wife of Governor Sir Patrick Stuart (1843 -1847). The occasion was the Fancy Dress Ball held at the Palace on Monday, 19th February, 1844. Some 600 persons attended the ball, at which "quadrilles, English, Scotch and Irish dances were in order danced". [excerpt]
