Abstract: The history of libraries is a significant aspect of the history of civilization. Great libraries are inevitably linked with important historical periods going as far back as the Sumerians and Babylonians. It is surely not without significance that the first great Maltese library we know of should have been founded in the 18th century, the century in which European civilization reached a fine flowering in our country through the influence of the Knights of St. John. This does not mean, however, that no libraries existed previously or that any previous libraries must have been negligible. [excerpt]
