dc.description.abstract	In the 1840's the present modern suburb of Sliema was a village in its infancy stage. The Government Gazette of 1837 describes Sliema "as a village in the suburb of Valletta", while H. E. the Governor Sir Patrick Stuart in an address to the Council of Government in December 1845 stated that the villages of Sliema and St. Julians, which were formerly of occasional resort, "have now became permanently inhabited and are much frequented during the summer months for health and recreation.
