Abstract: The law of salvage is an important part of maritime law and its origins are of great antiquity. From time immemorial, the salvage of subjects in distress at sea, has always been encouraged and therefore, the merit of rewarding maritime salvers seems to have been recognised as selfevident. Simply, salvage occurs when an endangered entity at sea, is rescued by a person or group of persons called salvor or salvors. Consequently, there could be various subjects of salvage, including vessels, cargo, freight, hire and even human life. Freight is the money earned in a voyage charterparty, while hire is that earned in a time charterparty. Thus, if cargoes are salved, so also freight and hire, earned by the carriage of such goods, are saved.
