Abstract: On September 16, 1864, through the bull Singulari Amore, Pope Pius IX solemnly established the Diocese of Gozo. The same bull laid down that the Cathedral Church of the new Diocese will be the Matrice of Our Lady, considered from time immemorial as the earliest church on the island. A description of the church that dominated the Citadel until the great siege of Gozo of 1551 is wanting. However from the few available sources, it is possible to form an idea of the medieval centre of Christianity on the island of Gozo.
