| dc.description.abstract | After the lifting of the Malta Siege on 8th September 1565, Grandmaster La Valette together with his council decided to actuate the plans to build a new fortified capital city on the small peninsula called Mount Sceberras both dominating and straddling the Grand Harbour with the still battered cities of Vittoriosa and Senglea to its south and Marsamxett Creek to its North. The scheme of building a new capital city was actually initiated some fifteen years prior to the siege of 1565 by Grandmaster Domedes (1536-53) who after consultations with the Florentine Grand Prior of Capua, architect Fra Leone Strozzi, obtained the services of the Italian military engineer, Antonio Ferramolino from Bergamo.
