A long experience has proved to me, that there are several hundred words in the English language, which an Italian not as yet advanced in the study of that language, on hearing pronounced, or seeing written, might at the moment take in a sense totally different from that which they are really intended to convey; and would find himself much embarrassed, and involved in ambiguities in endeavouring to make a verbal translation. Equally embarrassed would he be by many other words, which, besides their primitive signification, analogous to the Italian orthography, are frequently used in another and an entirely distinct and dissimalar sense. It is to this class of words, which may be known by their being, when literally translated, discordant with the import of the original phrase, that I would in particular call a more serious attention than is generally afforded.en_GB
