dc.description.abstractAlthough English is spoken in several Maltese families much of this English is a semi-literal translation from Maltese. The result is that children, coming from these homes, go to school with a brand of spoken English built up from a language highly influenced by Maltese. Teachers are often heard remarking that these children speak a language that is neither English nor Maltese. We may, therefore, assume the following possible groups of speakers in Malta.
