Abstract: Local maritime law used to be regulated by Part II of the commercial code, certain parts of the Merchant Shipping Acts, 1894 to 1958 of the United Kingdom which were extended or applied to Malta 9 tho Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (Act XI) of 1954, and various other local Ordinances and Acts embodied in Chapters 27, 40, 41, 84 and 101 of the Revised Edition of the Laws of Malta, 1942, and Ordinance XI of 1960 and Act XLIII of 1965. This state of affairs has been considerably modified by the passing of Act XI by the House of Representatives at Sitting No. 173 of the 28th March, 1973 9 receiving the then Governor-General's assent on the 6th April, 1973. This Act is known as the Merchant Shipping Act, 1973. In terms of Section 1 (2) therefore, Parts II to X were to come into force on such date as the Minister responsible for Shipping (the prime Minister) appointed by notice in the Government Gazette.
