Abstract: | This chapter gives an overview of the role of the UNDP in promoting the sustainable development of Small Island developing states (SIDS). The chapter briefly describes the contribution of the expert group on vulnerability which was set up under the auspices of the UNDP, and which was instrumental in the organisation of a number of expert group meetings on major issues of interest to SIDS. The chapter also lists a number of initiatives taken by UNDP with regard to the intergovernmental process for the review of the Barbados Programme of Action including technical review on vulnerability, advocacy, capacity development, establishment of a trust fund for vulnerability reduction and resilience building, and assistance with governance development and implementation. The chapter argues that the ready acceptance of the vulnerability concept and the need for priority action to strengthen resilience provided the UNDP with a unique opening and opportunity to develop a 10-year partnership with the SIDS in pursuit of their sustainable development, including achieving milestones such as those contained in the Millennium Development Goals. |
