Abstract: The qualitative study examined the processes that lead from self- perceived awareness to selfperceived acceptance in gay identity formation in Maltese males ranging from the ages of 18- 30. The study was written from a retrospective perception, with all the participants having been open about their sexual orientation for at least over three years prior to the study. Data was collected through the use of the semi-structured interview, and the results were then analysed through use of interpretative data analysis. The study’s results, highlighted the impact that stigma towards LGBTQ society, has on the individual who is going through gay identity formation. It also examined the experience of coming out as an individual with a gay identity, and studied how individuals reached self-acceptance towards their gay identity. All in all, developing a gay identity can be stressful, however once the individual reaches the phase of selfacceptance it is perceived as a positive experience.
