Abstract: This thesis deals with the exemptions from those rules of competition established by virtue of Article 85( 1) of the EEC Treaty. Exemptions are examined both from a substantive point of view as well as from a procedural perspective. Particular attention is given to the problems characterising this specific area of the EC Competition Lav·t, ranging from interpretation to the integration of exemptions in national legislation. Constant reference is made to the newly introduced Maltese Act on Competition which came into force on the 1 February 1995. This is of importance not only in the light of Malta's manifest aspirations to Join the European Union, but as an indicator of Malta's progress in this sector, when compared to the obtaining legislative situation in other European States.
