Abstract: This qualitative study investigates the lived experience of Gozitan Long Commuters and the psychological implications of their daily commutes. The main aim behind this study is to understand the struggles and frustration that these commuters go through to have better job opportunities. Data was obtained through conducting in-depth semi- structured interviews with five participants sharing the same profession. The emergent themes were analysed through interpretative phenomenological analysis. A significant number of results support the literature, indicating that although one considers the Maltese islands as small, the effects of commuting are as negative as those in much bigger countries. The findings highlight the psychological states which these commuters experience from one day to another – the daily grind. Exploring such psychological states through the commuters’ experiences has generated awareness of the daily concerns, tension, anger, physical exhaustion that these workers had to go through on a daily basis, especially in stormy weather. These powerful emotions in turn generate a sense of losing control of the commute, which induces heightened anxiety and stress.
