Abstract: This study is aimed at exploring stress and coping in student nurses attending the University of Malta. Five audio-recorded interviews were conducted and transcribed verbatim. The resulting transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This form of analysis allowed the identification of the main themes from the data collected. The main themes that emerged where stressors associated with academic work and those associated with placements. Other themes included the quality of working relationships, the advantages and disadvantages of their status as students and coping techniques employed to alleviate stress. The findings suggest that, although academia was considered stressful, students were more stressed about aspects of their course that could give them an indication of how they would fare as professional nurses. These included how they got on with other staff members and how these professionals treated them, as well as their own competency as students in a practical setting. Because of the limited availability of research on stress in student nurses conducted on a Maltese cohort, the resulting findings are contributors to available literature.
