Abstract: When I came to choose a subject for my thesis, I felt that it is worth choosing a topic which apart from being interesting is one which arises frequently and which concerns many people. I immediately realised that the law of succession is certainly one branch of the law of direct relevance to all and one which is used continually in all legal offices. After some reflection on the matter, I then opted to write about the question of substitution which is perhaps that part of the law of succession that is most interesting. It is humbly hoped that the research carried out about this part of the subject will serve some purpose and possibly will help towards a fuller investigation of the subject in the future. This work has taken up nearly one year to complete, and this involved various difficulties such as that of sifting through the voluminous, material available on the subject and selecting only that which I felt to be of importance and relevance. After that all the necessary research was carried out and the original manuscript prepared, there still was the difficult task of typing out the original copy after correcting it on stencils, proof-reading same, duplicating, collating and all other work connected with the final presentation of this thesis.
