Abstract: Gozo, situated just under six kilometres to the northwest of Malta, is 80km south of the nearest landfall in Sicily and 298 km north of the African coast. Gibraltar is 1836km to the west and Alexandria, Egypt 1519km to the east. The island is about 14.5km long, and 7.25 at its widest and, with an area of 67 sq km, it is the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago. Its population stands close to 30,000, a fifth of whom live in the capital Victoria, more commonly known as Rabat. [excerpt]
