Data from seven professionals working with female sex offenders was gathered using semi- structured interviews to explore how professionals, working in the mental health field in Malta, perceive female sexual offending and how their perceptions influence their work with this population. The research concluded that most mental health professionals in Malta are not knowledgeable about female sexual offending and about the challenges these clients present. In addition to this, existing gender stereotypes and the media have been found to greatly influence the professionals’ beliefs and perceptions about these perpetrators. The importance of supervision, self-care and teamwork for the professionals in question is highlighted. In addition to this, the lack of proper training for the professionals, and adequate services for female sex offenders in Malta is also emphasised.en_GB
