Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experience of adoptive homosexual parents in the Maltese context. There is a lack of research with regards to the experience of same-sex parents when adopting. Three participants contributed to this study by sharing their experience of same-sex adoption and parenting within the local context. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were carried out and a phenomenological approach was adopted to capture the noteworthy themes. The transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), from which five themes were extracted: the relationship, family, the decision to adopt, the experience of parenthood and the challenges that they faced before and after the adoption. It was concluded that the change in laws was very significant, as something that was once forbidden suddenly became a possibility and eventually a reality. However, despite the legal advancements, society still needs to be further educated on same–sex adoption. Recommendations as elicited from the data indicate that further research and policy should be implemented. |
