Abstract: European Union membership of Malta and Gozo was first conceived by the Nationalist Party led by Eddie Fenech-Adami. On 17 February 1979 the Party published a resolution in which it called for the opening of negotiations leading to full membership of the European Economic Community, as the EU was then known. This goal was repeated in one electoral manifesto after another ever since. When voted into Government in May 1987 the goal became a priority. On 16 July 1990. Malta submitted a formal application to join the European Community. Accession negotiations were formally opened on 15 February 2000. [excerpt]
