| Abstract: | The French statesman Fracois-Emmanuel de Saint-Priest visited Malta in 1786. He recollected his impressions of the island in the volume 'Malte par un Voyageur Francois', published in Malta five years later. This book included the first printed poems in Maltese, written by Gioacchino Navarro, the second librarian of the National Library. Truly, these were nothing but the lyrics of known folk songs. The publication of these humble verses enticed other foreign scholars and visitors to include them in later studies. Their great fortune provides ample proof of the power of the press. |
