This study focuses on how multi-sensory theatre allows people with special needs – such as neurodivergent people and those with physical and communication disabilities – to participate in theatrical performances. The work processes of Irish theatre company Replay provide a reference point in the study to highlight various interactive practices such as live singing, live music, tactile stimulation, and light, all of which enable audience members to participate directly in an immersive experience. Through such interactivity, this form of theatre also helps people to improve their physical, intellectual, cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions. The dissertation develops its argument via the exploration of creative processes used by professional performers to produce inclusive performances aimed at people with special needs. These techniques include workshops, brainstorming, fieldwork, and professional consultation with various therapists who provide guidance regarding effective ways that benefit individuals. A performance by Replay is used as a case study to highlight some aspects of the training required by performers, as well as to underline the aims and objectives of the performance and to discuss the qualitative outcomes of how this production helps its intended audience. To this end, a methodology blend that comprises personal fieldwork at Replay Theatre Company is developed through shadowing and communication with the company’s artistic director and performers.en_GB
