Abstract: | The Malta G.P.O. had been making use of this scheduled Italian air connection for the transmission of mail since June 1931, when Societa Anonima Navigazione Aerea (S.A.N.A.), Ala Littoria's predecessor, included Malta as a port of call on the tri-weekly flying boat service between Rome, Naples, Syracuse and Tripoli in North Africa. The pictured ill fated Italian aircraft "Syracuse ", which had cost 1,200,000 Italian Lire (circa 20,000 Sterling) was registered I-NAVE on May 11, 1935. It started its Ala Littoria operations from Malta on Saturday June 15, 1935, and only a week later, on a night landing on June 22 it crashed with damages sustained being beyond repair. [excerpt] |
