Abstract: | The purpose of this dissertation is to explore different voicing techniques that can be applied to the piano, while also attempting to offer my own personal insight on the topic. Voicing refers to the art of tonal production on the instrument, the tonal and dynamic changes that can be implemented through conscious changes in the body. I will attempt to integrate the physical, mental and musical aspects together, in order to achieve a multidisciplinary approach. This study will dissect three major piano works: Mozart’s sonata K.310 in A minor, Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel Op.24, and Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-sharp minor Op.3 No.2. I will then attempt to formulate an understanding from a performer’s perspective of how one can approach works of the classical and romantic eras with an understanding of tonal control. I will share my own experience of study, and what I have learned throughout these past three years, also documenting some of the practice strategies and approaches that have aided me in achieving the desired sound with the pieces presented. This dissertation will include knowledge gained from different sources such as books, online lectures and recordings as well as understanding formulated through my own reflection and study. The insight gained from the external sources will then be tied to my own observations. This study will be linked to my final piano recital, where I will be performing the works discussed in this dissertation. |
