Abstract: One of the activities of the Council of Europe which has been most successful in terms of bringing about real change to the lives of the citizens of Europe is the enforcement of one of the most known international documents - the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (commonly referred to as the European Convention on Human Rights- ECHR). The Convention, which next year has its 501h anniversary, can be termed as a real milestone in the history of human rights protection. It has developed through the adoption of numerous Protocols4 some of which have added to the rights protected by the Convention, others of which have altered the procedural aspects of the Convention's operation. The rights protected by the Convention and Protocols include the classical human rights such as the right to a fair trial in Article 6, the right to liberty and security of the person in Article 5; and the liberal freedoms which include the right to freedom of expression provided for in Article 10 and the right to freedom of assembly and association in Article 11.
