The relevance of the European identity in the Brexit debate

Abstract

An identity is formed and claimed by different characteristics and factors. These characteristics then create several interlinking connections between people and their surroundings; including globally with worldwide partners as well as at the European level with Europe as a continent, among European countries, EU member states and the EU as a whole. At the European level, these interlinking connections form European Identity; a collective identity that the people of Europe or EU citizens can relate to. However, the strength of European Identity varies. Different approaches can be taken and several perspectives can be viewed. This can be seen in the United Kingdom and the Brexit debate. Thus, taking this perspective this study seeks to answer the research question, “To what extent does the UK relate to such factors and in turn, to what extent were these factors considered within the Brexit debate?” Using a mixed method approach, with a combination of primary resources and secondary research, data and statistics, the United Kingdom’s approach to the factors of European Identity is analysed, eventually outlining the factors of European Identity considered and its relevance in the Brexit debate. Findings show that the extent to which the UK exercises European Identity determined the UK’s response to the Brexit debate. This is seen through the interpretations of events, the choices and influences to decisions made and interlinking debates. Additionally, the way Brexit is described as a ‘wake-up call’ signifies among others, the importance and usefulness of European Identity factors and the need to strengthen them.
