Abstract: Freedom of expression is recognized as a human right under article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Church – an institution which throughout its ages did not always defend or practise this right – was ironically enough, the first institution in Gozo to have its own periodical or magazine entitled L-Għawdex, which gradually changed its name to its present one – IlĦajja f’Għawdex. Seventy-five years ago, the first issue of this magazine was published in Gozo by the Orphans’ Press, also owned by the diocese of Gozo. [excerpt]
