Abstract: Laws governing Laudemium during various periods: Roman law - Middle Ages - Knights of St. John, Code de Rohan - present law. Laudemium ('alienation fine', as our law calls it, or 'laudemio') is, speaking very generally, a payment made to the domuinus by the acquirer of the utile dominium or improvements when these are alienated by the emphyteusis. Instead of plunging, with Virgil, 'in medias res', I think it would be well to mention the various laws by which laudemium has, at various periods, been to a greater or lesser degree regulated, with particular reference to Malta.
