Abstract: The study focuses on motivation in area secondary schools, with a particular interest on educational outings. Theories of motivation in education were explored through a literature review. Questionnaires were conducted with teachers in four area secondary schools; two male and two female. These questionnaires focused on how teachers attempt to motivate their students and why they opt for certain methods and techniques. A principle objective of the questionnaires was to establish teachers' opinions on educational outings as a motivating factor. Focus groups were held with a number of randomly selected Form 3, 4 and 5 students from each school. These focused on what motivates students most and their opinions on school visits. Based on the data collected from teachers and students, a discussion and recommendations concluded this piece of work.
