Abstract: Basketball is a 5-a-side game which is usually played indoors, but lends itself to improvised outdoor settings. Its educational values are well recognised around the world, and many are the physical education syllabi that include basketball and mini-basketball as specific areas. This study is aimed at analysing the present situation of the game in local secondary schools at the eve, and the start of the 3rd millennium. The study was carried out on a survey response of 4 7 physical education teachers and 4 70 students from 4 7 different state and church schools. This study also incorporates a brief historical review of the game of basketball, focusing mainly on basketball's local history. A mini-basketball programme for 11 and 12-year-old students is also presented, aimed at providing teachers with a number of different mini-basketball activities to present to their students. The responses given by teachers and students outline a number of problems in basketball's present situation, especially at secondary school level. Such problems were analysed and a number of recommendations for the betterment of the present situation were given.
