| Abstract: | The main theme of this work is the study of the influence of Alessandro Manzoni's literary work I Promessi Sposi on Maltese narrative prose in the historical genre. The work consists of four chapters and an introduction. The first chapter describes the major features of Manzoni's novel. The second chapter compares the characters of Manzoni's novel with those of Maltese novels. The third chapter analyses a number of aspects common to both the Maltese Historical novel and Manzoni's work, including a consideration of the relationship between the landscape and the characters• state of mind; the religious landscape, and finally the geographical location in which the novels are set.· The final chapter deals with an exposition of the various common features found within the plot of the novels. |
