Abstract: The aim of this sociolinguistic survey carried out on a number of informants of different social class and gender, is to identify the influence of the Maltese language as a mother language on certain phonological variables in English as a second language. It also aims at discovering the influence of teachers on their pupils' attitudes towards school, language and reading and to draw out the relationship between the two types of data.
