dc.description.abstract | This study sought to explore the nursing management of pressure sores in an elderly institution. A descriptive non-experimental design, entailing a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative approaches was adopted. The study was conducted in a local governmental elderly institution, where eight nurses consented to participate. A structured observation schedule was devised to collect data on the current management of pressure sores. Participants were observed working throughout their day shift where at the end of the study these were also posed to a face-to-face semi-structured interview. Various authors postulated that current management of pressure sores should be aimed at minimizing and preventing further tissue damage together with the consideration of pressure-reducing devices, nutritional status along with the provision of a proper wound environment. The above mentioned techniques were seen implemented in the nursing management of pressure sores. However, findings indicate that nurses lack certain equipment and facilities. Respondents claimed that work overload is frequently experienced resulting in limited nursing care. Some of the suggested recommendations put forward following the completion of this research study include the introduction of resources by the implementation of proper mattresses, wound dressings and knowledge of appropriate care together with the provision of appropriate staffing levels. Various strengths and limitations were outlined in the present study. However further research is suggested where the study should be repeated using a prospective study over a longer period of time. | en_GB |
