Quelques pièces de Gabriel Marcel étudiées dans l'optique existentialiste

Abstract

This dissertation is a partly chronological and partly thematical study of a selection of Gabriel Marcel's plays. The main documents in my study include a number of his plays and several philosophical works written by the same author. Other documents include books written by different authors on his theatre and philosophy. My primary aims were to analyse his plays in the realm of existential thinking. However, since Gabriel Marcel frequently expressed his desire that his dramatic work not be considered only as a vehicle for the expression of his philosophical ideas, I attempted a study of seven of his plays in which the development of character and conflict of personality were my chief purposes. The study begins with a general introduction in which I under lined the principles of existentialism. This is followed by an analysis of each of the seven plays. In the second part of my study I sought to find analogies between the plays and his philosophy. The work is followed by a conclusion and a bibliography.
