dc.description.abstractThis dissertation discusses why it is still relevant to teach history in today' s society and subsequently what form of history teaching should be applied in order to secure more the position of History in the curriculum. In Chapter 1 different perspectives applicable to the teaching of the subject were analyzed. It was concluded that preparation for citizenship and forming an identity should be amongst the main aims of the teaching of the discipline. Through the right methodology history should stimulate students to reflect more upon different issues and be critical, creative and independent thinkers. Chapter 2 of this dissertation tries to give as clear as possible a picture of the type of history and methods, which are being used presently in all school sectors. A qualitative and quantitative approach was used in questionnaires to explore and analyze different issues. It resulted that the teachers and the majority of students consider the teaching and learning of history still relevant for different reasons such as the learning and acquisition of important concepts and to be more knowledgeable about the historic environment of our country. It also transpired from both questionnaires that a reconsideration of the content and structure of the syllabus should be carried out. Different type of resources should be made available in schools particularly a change in the present textbook and less red tape in historical outings. In the final chapter, some recommendations and suggestions to be implemented in the short and long terms are made with regards the teaching of the subject in order to for History to be perceived by students as more attractive, enjoyable and meaningful.en_GB
